Museum MACAN

The Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Nusantara (Museum MACAN), located in Jakarta, Indonesia, is a leading institution dedicated to the display and promotion of modern and contemporary art. Founded by Indonesian philanthropist Haryanto Adikoesoemo, the museum officially opened its doors to the public in November 2017. Museum MACAN has quickly become a cultural hub in Southeast Asia, known for its extensive and diverse collection that spans both Indonesian and international art. Museum MACAN’s permanent collection features works by prominent Indonesian artists such as Raden Saleh, Affandi, and contemporary figures like Eko Nugroho and Entang Wiharso. The museum also showcases international artists, including Yayoi Kusama, Jeff Koons and Andy Warhol, offering a global perspective on modern and contemporary art. The museum is particularly celebrated for its vibrant exhibitions that often explore themes of identity, culture and social issues. Notable exhibitions at Museum MACAN have included “Yayoi Kusama: Life is the Heart of a Rainbow,” which attracted significant attention and featured the artist’s iconic infinity rooms and polka-dot installations. Another significant exhibition, “Agus Suwage: The Theater of Me,” offered a comprehensive look at the work of one of Indonesia’s most influential contemporary artists. Museum MACAN is also committed to education and community engagement. It offers a variety of public programs, including workshops, lectures, and guided tours, aiming to make art accessible to a broader audience. The museum’s modern architectural design, featuring open spaces and innovative galleries, enhances the visitor experience, making it a landmark destination for art lovers in Indonesia and beyond.
