OpenAI
Founded as a non-profit in 2015 by Sam Altman, Reid Hoffman, Jessica Livingston, Elon Musk, Ilya Sutskever, Peter Thiel and several other backers and advisors, OpenAI is the for-profit artificial intelligence research company behind the large language models (LLMs) GPT-3, GPT-3.5 and GPT-4, as well as ChatGPT and DALL-E. OpenAI’s original mission involved developing “friendly” artificial general intelligence, or AGI, for the betterment of humanity. In 2023, the company launched a premium service tier for users of its chatbot (ChatGPT Plus), released its technology as an API, and in partnership with Microsoft, debuted the AI-powered Bing chatbot.
