Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa
The Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa (Zeitz MOCAA) was founded in September 2017 by German businessman Jochen Zeitz and South African curator Mark Coetzee. Situated in the historic V&A Waterfront in Cape Town, South Africa, the museum is housed in a converted grain silo complex, offering a stunning architectural experience designed by renowned architect Thomas Heatherwick. Zeitz MOCAA is best known for being the largest museum of contemporary African art in the world, dedicated to collecting, preserving, and exhibiting cutting-edge works from artists across the African continent and its diaspora. The museum’s permanent collection features works by prominent contemporary artists such as El Anatsui, Wangechi Mutu and William Kentridge. These collections provide a comprehensive overview of the diverse and dynamic art scenes across Africa, highlighting both established and emerging talents. Zeitz MOCAA has also hosted several notable exhibitions, including “All Things Being Equal…” which served as the museum’s inaugural exhibition, and “Still Here Tomorrow to High Five You Yesterday…,” which explores themes of identity, politics, and history through various media. Zeitz MOCAA not only functions as a museum but also as a cultural hub, with educational programs, artist residencies, and public workshops, reinforcing its role in fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation of contemporary African art.
